Description
These bunny ears may look soft and fuzzy, but this is one bunny you do not want to pet. Those fluffy little polka dots are called glochids, and they are made up of fine little spines with barbed ends that will stick into your skin and make your life absolutely miserable. This Opuntia microdasys (also known as bunny ears cactus, bunny cactus, angel's-wings or polka-dot cactus) is a species of cactus native and endemic to central and northern Mexico and can be found in many landscapes in Arizona. Cactus like this use these glochids as protection from predators, and also as a way to help capture and absorb moisture from fog and dew.
While this cactus can be considered to be edible it is not often an ideal choice. As you can imagine it can be quite tricky to prepare. A fire or torch can be used to singe off the glochids before preparation. But if you miss any of them they can easily cause irritation.
