Artist's Description
The white thorn acacia, also known as Acacia Constricta, is a common shrub or small tree found in the deserts of Arizona and the Southwestern United States. It is a member of the pea family and well adapted to the harsh, arid conditions of the desert. The tree can grow anywhere from 20 to 30 feet tall, with a rounded spreading crown and multiple branches. The leaves are compound, meaning that each leaf has multiple leaflets, giving the tree a feathery appearance. Showy yellow to orange flowers grow in clusters that look like little puff balls and give off an aromatic fragrance. Seed pods are slender and reddish brown anywhere from two to five inches long. Thorns on the tree are whitish in color, as the name implies, and can grow up to an inch long.
Not only is this tree an incredible food source for birds and other small wildlife, it has a long history of use by indigenous peoples as both a food source and for medicinal purposes.
