Description
The south fork of Long Island, New York features the largest regional group of windmills in America. Of the 11 surviving windmills the one found at Water Mill is unique in several ways. For starters this is the only example of an early type of smock mill which has a stationary tower with a revolving cap that sits directly on a greased curb at the top of the tower. It is also the shortest of the Long Island windmills at just 29 feet, 4 ½ inches. But probably most interesting is that while most farmers of the day brought their grist to the mill, this mill was brought to the grist. It was originally built just north of Sag Harbor at Hog Neck in North Haven. In 1813 James Corwith purchased the mill to replace another that had been damaged by a storm in 1811, and had it relocated to Water Mill on a cart pulled by oxen. The mill has since been added to the National Register of Historic Places and is just one piece of the rich history found within the Hamptons.
