The zero mile marker sign signifies the end of the road for US Highway 1 in Key West, Florida. The Highway stretches 2,369 miles between Fort Kent, Maine near the Canadian border and Key West, Florida, connecting many of the major cities of the East Coast of the United States. Visitors to this spot often revel in reaching the end of the road, of which the last leg from Miami to Key West travels through the Florida Keys island chain across a series of bridges also refered to as the Overseas Highway. The sign also signifies that travelers have reached the Southernmost city in the contiguous United States and found a place where time slows down, chickens roam the streets, literature and art are prevalent and sunsets are celebrated nightly.
