Description
The Takin is one of those creatures that seems to come straight out of a Dr. Suess book and could just be the most interesting creature you've probably never heard of. Bearing resemblances to many different creatures including goats, muskox and Buffalo, but is more closely related to sheep, making it a great example of convergent evolution.
Considered to be a vulnerable or threatened species, their numbers continue to suffer from illegal hunting despite being considered a national treasure in China and highly protected. The Takin has few natural predators and the majority of Takin deaths are caused by humans hunting or poaching.
This Sichuan Takin seen at the San Diego Zoo is part of a program to study the behaviors of Takins, assist with management of the species and help their numbers recover. According to the San Diego Zoo, they were the first organization to care for Sichuan takins in North America after receiving a gift from China of two females in 1987 and a male the following year. They also boast the first Sichuan Takin born outside of China and have had great success with their breeding program.
