Description
This photograph features a tile set into a walkway on Monterey, California's historic cannery row. The tile displays a vintage sardine can packaging for Easter Brand California Sardines in Salad Oil.
Monterey, California has a rich and culturally diverse history. In the mid 1800's Chinese settlers established the fishing industry in Monterey. With World War I the need for well preserved canned foods increased, spurring the growth of fish packing in the area and in 1927 the American Tin Cannery was constructed. By World War II the cannery had expanded and Monterey had become the "Sardine Capital of the World". Today hotels, restaurants, gift shops and a world renowned aquarium line Canner Row, but amidst the tourism the history is not forgotten.
