Description
Chicken wire glass was first manufactured late in the 19th century as a type of safety glass revered for its durability and fire resistance. The embedded chicken wire reduced the ability for shattering, and helped maintain the integrity of the glass. It also provided an element of privacy as it can be more difficult to see through than standard glass. While it is no longer a required part of building codes, it can still be found in many historic buildings, like this one in Monterey, California. It is also sought out by homeowners and designers for adding creative elements to newer homes.
